Betty Benintende

Betty Benintende, 86, of Unadilla passed away Thursday afternoon, May 31, 2012 at Fox Hospital following a long illness.

Betty was born on July 15, 1925 in Walton, the daughter of the late Carl W and Inda (Youmans) Beardslee. On October 3, 1942 she married Michael Benintende in Walton. He died in1994. Betty was a member of Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Walton, where she sang in the choir, St. Mary’s Young at Heart Club, Catholic Daughters of America, Walton Grange, former president of the AARP Walton Chapter, Walton Chamber of Commerce. Prior to moving to Walton, Betty was active on Staten Island as a Girl Scout and Brownie troop leader, election inspector, school crossing guard, and Legion of Mary Rosary Society. She also worked as a waitress and was a sales clerk at a local department store. Later, after she moved to Walton she was an election inspector in Walton, manager of the S & H Green Stamp redemption center at the Big M, and deputy clerk for the Town of Walton. Betty also taught religious education and was an instructor for religious education teachers, and taught remedial reading at Townsend Elementary School.

Betty was a kind and gentle soul who loved cooking and baking for her family and friends. She always felt the more she could cook for the better it was. She was a compassionate lady who didn’t have a mean bone in her body. She always believed in sharing and even when she was seriously ill she always inquired about the wellbeing of others.

Betty enjoyed traveling extensively. She went on cruises, traveled all over the United States and Canada, to the Middle east and Europe. She was an avid reader and card player. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint. Over the years she made many table cloths, sweaters, wedding ring quilts and many outfits for her grandchildren which she lovingly created. She also loved flower gardening both inside and out. Betty’s favorite times were having family and friends near, having a pizza party or cooking a turkey, rolling up the rugs and dancing, playing Michigan Rummy, Scrabble or just visiting with all the people around her. Her energy and love was infinite.

Betty is survived by two daughters, Marie (Edward) Roenelt, Stockholm, NJ; Isabelle “Izzy” (Casey) Caratelli, Unadilla; and three sons: Rev.Joseph Benintende Pastor Emeritus of St. Mary’s, Oneonta; Charles (Mildred) Benintende, Wilmington, Delaware; Pastor Michael (Susan) Benintende, McKeesport, Pennsylvania; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Keith Beardslee, Endwell; sister, Mabel Brucher, Smallwood, NY; sister and brother in laws, Rose and Gus Gargiulo, Brooklyn, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
