Alice M. Smith 72, a lifelong resident of Walton passed away Wednesday morning, February 23, 2011 at Bassett Healthcare of Cooperstown, following a long illness.

Alice was born on June 25, 1938 in Hazel, NY; the daughter of the late Alford and Mary (Barnhart) Campbell. She was a graduate of Walton High School, class of 1956. On October 1, 1993 she married Dr. William Smith. Alice loved her work as a teacher's aide at the ARC Carousel, Hamden. Alice loved children, and children loved her. Her gift of reaching children was readily apparent whenever she was with them, especially the "energetic" ones, who would respond to her love. She was known to all her "kids" as Grandma Alice. They knew she was never afraid to speak her mind, and they all loved her for it. She loved to read all types of books, especially cookbooks; gardening and, of course, traveling with Bill. She attended the First Presbyterian Church, Walton.

Alice is survived by her loving family; her husband, Bill, two daughters: Jacqueline (David) Brown of Walton; Dorothy (David) Bass of Wake Forest, NC and one son: Gerald "Spike" (Karen) Walke of Walton; stepchildren, Dr. David (Lynn) Smith, Snyder, NY; Sharon Smith, Sedona, AZ; Jonathan (Nikki) Smith, Appliton, WI; Matthew (Beth) Smith, Medway, MA; and Timothy Smith, Johnson City; four grandchildren. Ryan (Taneka) Brown; Kyle Brown, G. Vincent Walke; Samantha Walke; step grandchildren, Jahmaia, Cameron, Caroline, Gabriel, Connor, and Michael; great-grandchildren, Abigail Brown & Rylee Hromada; her very good friends, Gerald Walke & Joyce Brown, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Alice was predeceased by two sisters, Janice Faye Gardner, and Paulette Lezer, and two step-grandchildren, Abigail and Noah Smith.

A memorial service will be held in the spring at a date and time to be announced. Memorial contributions in Alice's memory may be made to her beloved children of the Delaware County ARC, Carousel Children's Services, State Hwy 10, Hamden, NY 13782.
