Arlette Anna (Maurer) Schriber, 91, of Walton, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2014 in Delaware Valley Hospital in the town of Walton, after a well-lived life.
Arlette was born on Dry Brook Road in the town of Hancock, the daughter of the late E. T. & Anna Craning (Luchterhand) Maurer on July 19, 1923.
In 1925, her family moved to a farm on Sands Creek Road. She went to1st grade on Sands Creek. The schoolhouse is still there. In 1931, they moved to Route 17 where she went to a Pennsylvania school for 3rd grade until the new school was built in Hancock in 1931. She went to 7th grade at a country school on Walton's Back River Road (toward Delhi). In January 1936, they moved to Mead Street in Walton where she attended Miller Avenue School. She was in the first 8th grade graduating class at the new Townsend School. She then went to the High School on Townsend Street starting in 9th grade. By 10th grade her family had moved to Treadwell. She graduated from there in 1940 with a total of 12 in the class.
On July 30, 1944, she married Floyd W. Schriber of Walton in the United Presbyterian Church where they were members for many years. More recently they were members of the Northfield Community Church.
She worked for J.J. Newberry's from September 1940 until 1943 and then at the Walton Pharmacy until after her marriage in 1944. From 1945 until 1949 she worked at the Kayser Silk Mill in Walton. She and Floyd had a poultry business with an average of five-thousand layers annually. In April 1958, she went to work at the William B. Ogden Free Library as Assistant Librarian until she retired in 1993.
Arlette and Floyd loved to travel, spending 28 winters in Bradenton, Florida. They also traveled many times to Maine and Prince Edward Island. They traveled extensively throughout the U.S. with family and friends.
She is survived by a son, Danton M. Schriber; a daughter Kathryn S. Cole and her husband Daniel, all of Walton; five grandchildren, Deana Stanard, Michael Schriber, Hannah Schriber, David Cole and Dulcie Cole; several great grand-children, nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her life-long friend Jeanette MacDonald, very good friends, Jim and Jean Scofield, who were always there for her and also her beloved "great-granddog," Webster. She was predeceased by her husband, Floyd, on September 4, 2006, after 62 years of marriage.
A graveside service will be held at Walton Cemetery, 55 Fancher Avenue, Walton on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 11AM with Bill Roberton and Rev. Marv Root, officiating.
Memorial contributions in Arlette's memory may be made to the Northfield Community Church, 5118 County Highway 23, Walton, NY 13856. Arrangements have been entrusted to Courtney Funeral Home, Walton.
