Obituary

Carl E. Johnson, 86, of Walton, New York, died March 29, 2007 after a prolonged illness.

Born April 6, 1920 in Mariners Harbor,Staten Island, NY, he was the son of the late Marie Berg and Erick Johnson. Carl graduated in 1937 from Hilton Memorial High School in Andes, NY. He lived most of his working life in the Syracuse, NY area and moved to Hamden, NY in 1977 upon retiring from 20 years at Carrier Corporation.

He was discharged from the U.S. Naval Service as a

Fireman First Class in January 1946 having served on the USS Essex in the Asiatic Pacific. Commissioned in 1942, the USS Essex saw major battles in Tokyo Bay, Wake Island, Gilbert Islands, Tarawa, Truk, Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tininan and Guam. He was a member of the American Legion and New York VFW Post 270, and did volunteer work for the local Senior Meals program. Carl was a crossword puzzle enthusiast, and will be remembered by his family sitting in his tattered brown recliner with the tv remote in one hand, a sharpened pencil in the other, and his beloved dog, Chico, in his lap.

His wife, the former Mary Jeanette Allen of Tompkins, NY, and his son, Alan Carl Johnson of Syracuse, NY precede him in death.

Surviving are his daughters, Barbara Stanat of Baton Rouge, LA and Patricia Cuyler of Syracuse, NY; grandchildren Lynn Ballard of Hardeville, SC, Thomas Wayne of East Syracuse, NY, Carla Johnson and Eric Johnson both of Cicero, NY, Michael and Robert Johnson of Mattydale, NY, Dawn Needham of Oregon, Lauren Stanat of Baton Rouge, LA, Jennifer Scherer of Seattle, WA, Scott Stanat of Jefferson Station, NY; 9 great grandchildren; a sister Elsie Hood of Hamden, NY; several nieces and nephews.

Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home is in charge of the cremation arrangements.

A private service will be held at a later date. The family suggests that memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of one's choice.
