Charles T. "Charlie" Markert, 67, of Downsville passed away on July 30, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. Charlie was born on February 6, 1949 in Binghamton, New York, the son of Dr. Charles Markert and Wilma Gunn Markert. He was a graduate of Ridgefield Park High School, Ridgefield Park, New Jersey. On November 11, 1973 he married Loana J. "Loni" Houck. She predeceased him on October 30, 2014.
Charlie is survived by his loving daughters Renee' (LTC Jeremy Chapman, US Army) of Fort Bliss, Texas and Jessica (Joe) Baldauf of Downsville; grandsons Grady, Bryce, and Eli Chapman, Brother Thomas (Julie) Markert of Downsville, sisters Barbara (Jack) Black of Tinton Falls, New Jersey, Mary Jean of Little Rock, Arkansas, Patty (Charlie) McCumpsey of Little Rock, Arkansas; mother-in-law Jessica Houck of Downsville, several nieces/nephews and great nieces/nephews.
Charlie worked for the NYCDEP and also was a union laborer until he retired.
Dr. Markert, Charlie's father, was founder of The Roundup Ranch Resort in 1947. As a young man at The Roundup Ranch, Charlie became an adept horseman and rodeo rider and won The East Coast Cutting Horse Association Award in 1967.
Charlie was an avid wildlife enthusiast, deer hunter, and loved feeding the birds. He took great pride in the beautiful flowers and hanging baskets around his house.
For many years Charlie faithfully and lovingly served as caretaker for his wife, Loni. She frequently let her family and friends know how much she appreciated, loved, and depended on him for the tender care he gave her.
Friends and family are invited to call on Friday, August 5, 2016 from 6 to 8 PM at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at 11 AM at The Colchester Community United Methodist Church, 15151 State Highway 206 in Downsville with the Rev. Dale Ashby, officiating.
Memorial contributions in Charlie's memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, New York 13820 and/or The Downsville Ladies Auxiliary, P. O. Box 69, Downsville, New York 13755.
