Allen E. "Dick" Welton, 87, a longtime resident of Walton, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital in San Antonio Texas, following a short illness.
Dick was born on August 31, 1923 in Granton, the son of the late Allen M. and Kathryn (Beers) Welton. He was a graduate of Walton High School. On January 28, 1943 he was inducted in the US Army Air Force where he served aboard B-24 Liberators's as a gunner in the South Pacific, specifically New Guinea, the Northern Solomons and the Philippines. He was awarded the Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal, A-P Theater Ribbon and 4 Bronze Stars. He was discharged on October 20, 1945 as a Staff Sargent. On June 26, 1946 he married the former June Schloss in a double wedding with his brother Ralph who married June's twin sister, Jean. He was predeceased by his wife, June on October 21, 2004 and his brother and sister in law, Ralph and Jean.
Dick was employed first at the National Bank of Delaware County, following his discharge from the service. He and June later owned and operated tthe Walton TV Sales and Service. Dick also worked at Bendix Corp for many years. He drove school bus and lastly worked at Chris' Flowers delivering flowers all over the countryside. Dick and June enjoyed camping with their family and friends, where they often hunted and fished as a family. Dick was also a long time member of the Fancher Hook & Ladder # 3 and later the combined Walton Fire Dept.
Dick will be remembered as a kind and gentle man who always encouraged and brought out the best in people.
Dick is survived by his loving family, his children, Elaine Reynolds of San Antonio, Texas and John Welton of Walton, his youngest brother, James Welton of Florida, 3 grand children, Michele, Micah and William, 9 great grandchildren, sisters in law, Marion Pomeroy and Marjorie Kite, both of Walton, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends and relatives are invited to call on Thursday, May 19, 2011, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton. Funeral services will be held on Friday morning at 11 AM at the United Presbyterian Church, cors. North and East Streets, Walton, with the Rev Lisa Ruth Mays, officiating. Burial will follow in Walton Cemetery with full military honors.
Memorial contributions in Dick's memory may be made to Walton Fire Dept. and EMS or the United Presbyterian Church, Walton.
