Doris Ann Furman Newman, 85, of Sidney Center passed away on Tuesday evening, February 7, 2023 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, following a short illness.

Doris was born on March 10, 1937 in Hobart, NY and is the daughter of the late Fred and Violet (Borst) Zimmerman.

Doris enjoyed flowers, gardening, caring for animals (especially her cats), making cakes for church functions and farming. She worked at Breakstones in Walton for a number of years, then moved on to dairy farming. Later in life she worked in the cafeteria at Delhi College. From there, she followed her love of cats and worked for Peace Plantation in Walton, and Love and Hope Sanctuary in Franklin. She was a member of the Sidney Center Baptist Church.

Doris is survived by her loving family, her children, James E. (Becca) Furman, Jr. of Norfolk, VA.; William Furman (Michele Johnson) of Franklin, NY; Lisa Furman (John Bell) of Locke, NY and Vivian Walker, Delhi, NY. She was predeceased by her son, Byron J. Furman in 2019, and her brothers, Harold, Stanley and Fred Zimmerman.

The family would like to thank her caregivers who helped make it possible for her to stay in her home until her passing.

A memorial service will be held at the Sidney Center Church at a date and time to be announced. Arrangements are with Courtney Funeral Home, Walton.
