IN LOVING MEMORY OF

March 4, 1917 – November 24, 2012
Dorothy H. Van Loan, 95, of Walton went peacefully to her Lord early Saturday morning with her family by her side. She was born on March 4, 1917 in Hancock, the daughter of the late Peter and Effie Hoagland Somers. She worked as a cook at the Model Restaurant in Hancock until the death of her husband, Donald on October 10, 1957. It was then she moved to Walton with her 7 children.
Dorothy was devoted to her God and her family. She never remarried and raised 7 children on her own. She cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and often sat on the front porch and watched them play. She had a great sense of humor and could always bring a smile on your face. She had a heart of gold and always made time to lend an ear, a hug, or some advice. She was a wonderful baker and always had delicious cakes, cookies and pies on hand whenever anyone would stop by for a visit or a hot cup of tea. She also enjoyed watching the New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves, WWF Wrestling and could be heard cheering for her favorite team or athlete from her chair. She also loved watching her soaps.
Dorothy is survived by her four daughters, Faye Anderson of Oxford, Bonnie Van Loan, Linda and Carl Whitaker, Sherrie Murphy and Bill Scully, all of Walton, one son, Donald and Francine Van Loan of Dallas, Georgia, her 27 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald in 1957, sons, Ronald in 1985 and Douglas in 2011 and a grandson, Jeffrey Mead in 1987.
Friends and relatives are invited to call on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 from 6 to 8 PM at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton.
