Edna Gertz, 100, of Walton, passed away Tuesday May 21, 2013 at Robinson
Terrace following a long illness. Edna was born in Garfield, New Jersey on
October 26, 1912, daughter of the late Reinhard and Martha (Wolf) Leissner.
Edna married Henry Gertz on July 16, 1936. Her "Honey" predeceased Edna in
1992 after 56 years of a wonderful marriage.
Edna is survived by her loving family: son Jerry of Herkimer and Havana, FL
and daughter and son-in-law Judy and John Kipp of Walton, grandchildren
Jodie and David Barclay of Flushing MI, Jayson Gertz of Bedford TX, Kelly
Joseph Todd of Blountstown FL, Denise and Teri Roots of CA, Trisha and Tim
Shelly of Hurdle Mills, NC, Tara and Jason Coleman and Anna and Wm.Joseph
Waddell all of Mebane NC, twenty great-grandchildren Alexandra, Lucas and
Jacob Barclay, Hailee, Noel and Jonah Gertz, Kyle, Katelyn and Kaleb Todd,
Courtney, Tyler and Dustin Roots, Christian, Matthew, Andrew, Christopher
and Ethan Rada, Aurora and Evelyn Waddell, Polly Jean Shelly, great-great
granddaughter Ava and special nieces and nephew. She was predeceased by her
brother Rudolf, sister Gertrude, granddaughter Denise Rada and daughter-inlaw
Kim Gertz.
Edna graduated from Patterson State Teacher's College and taught 1st Grade
in Garfield NJ for more than 25 years after first staying home to raise her
children. After retirement Edna and Henry travelled the United States,
Europe and Asia when not spending time with their children and
grandchildren. Edna lived the first 82 years of her life in Garfield, NJ,
worshipping at St.John's Lutheran Church since birth. Moving to Walton in
1994, she became an active member of The First Congregational Church of
Walton. Edna was beloved by all that knew her, Her grace and love shone
through in all she did.
Friends and relatives are invited to a memorial service celebrating Edna's
life at 1pm on Sunday, June 2nd at The First Congregational Church of Walton
with Dr. Janet Schwengber officiating. Burial will be at a later date at
Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Patterson NJ.
