Elizabeth Jeanette Nichols Conklin 88 a life long resident of Walton, passed away Sunday morning, September 26, 2010 at home, surrounded by her family, following a long illness.

She was born on June 26, 1922 the daughter of the late Harry and Margaret (Dumond) Nichols. She attended the one room school district, Town of Franklin for her first eight years of schooling; her last years there were only two other pupils Kathleen and Buck Kilpatrick. She passed the regents then went to Walton High School. She stayed in town during the winter as the roads were not plowed. When the roads were good she drove to school. She graduated from Walton High in 1941.

On May 13, 1944 she married Mervin Conklin of Shavertown. They soon moved to Walton where Mervin worked for Lawrence Dumond. On May 1, 1951 they purchased the Tacy farm on West Brook which they operated together for forty years. Elizabeth worked in Grand Union store in Walton and Sentilla in Sidney

She was the leader of the West Brook Hayseeders 4-H Club for 28 years, helping develop many young people into fine citizens. The Delaware County Fair was a big part of their lives from showing dairy cattle to watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren, showing animals.

Elizabeth was a member of the Plymouth Community Church which she attended faithfully until her health wouldn't allow her to.

She enjoyed making quilts for her many grandchildren and great grandchildren, doing puzzles, watching the deer and birds from the house, picnics with her family at the pond. After retiring, Eliz and Merv loved to travel with tours to Europe and Alaska.

Elizabeth is survived by her loving family, her husband; Mervin , her children; Mary Elizabeth (Gerry) Walker, Walton; James Henry (Jacqueline) Conklin, Walworth ; William Mervin Conklin, California; Robert ( Pamela) Conklin, Walton; Barbara J. Palmer, Sidney Center; Christine (David) Walker, Oxford; Donald (Beth) Conklin, Walton; her Sister in laws, Hazel, Evelyn, Helen, and Florence, and several neices, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two daughters; Patricia and Catherine, two brothers; Hanford and William Nichols, and one sister; Catherine.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on Wednesday evening, September 29, 2010 from 6 to 8 at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton, NY. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday morning at 11 AM at the Plymouth Community Church, Franklin Road, with the Rev. Tom Davis, officiating. Burial will follow in Walton Cemetery.
