Obituary

Elizabeth (Betsy) Hume Elderkin passed away peacefully on February 23, 2022 at the age of 88. Betsy was born February 26, 1933 in Hamden, NY to parents John and Elizabeth (Aikens) Hume. After graduating from Delaware Academy in 1951, Betsy attended Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing, where she received a degree in nursing. She married her husband of 63 years, John Elderkin, on July 22, 1956. They had two sons, John and Joel, and two daughters, Jan and Judy.

Betsy showed her kindness and caring by serving the community at many healthcare facilities over the course of her career as a nurse. She worked at Smith Hospital, Delaware Valley Hospital, Broome Developmental Center, Delaware County Infirmary, and BOCES. In 1977, she received her bachelor's degree in nursing from SUNY Oneonta. Betsy was also an active member at the United Presbyterian Church in Walton, where she was a Youth Group advisor for many years.

Betsy retired in 1990. Following her retirement, she and her husband, John, spent a lot of time traveling throughout the United States, visiting all 50 states, as well as traveling to several other countries. She loved her husband and family dearly. Betsy took much pride in providing a warm and loving home, which was the place of many front porch visits with friends, neighbors, and family over the years. She loved her flower garden and was always eager to see new blooms. She enjoyed playing cards and board games, frequent visits to the casinos, helping those in need, and a good lawn sale deal. Her grandkids knew that there were always delicious treats waiting for them in her kitchen.

Betsy is survived by her children, John Elderkin (Amy) of Royse City, TX, Jan Elderkin (Rick White) of Albany, NY, Joel Elderkin (Camilla) of Niota, TN, and Judy Ogden (Todd) of Walton, NY; grandchildren, Celicia Pinnock (Clive), Duane Elderkin (Crystal Green), Christopher Ogden, Beth Ogden, Iris Lansing (Joseph), Heather Ogden, Jacqui White, Justin Williams (Laura), and Tyler Williams; great-grandchildren, Michael Negron, Joel Bockstruck, Tyler Bockstruck, Austin Williams (Khloe), Chase Williams, Madison Williams, Sierra Potts, Alyssa Williams, Remi Williams, and Eleanor Lansing; and many nieces and nephews.

Betsy was predeceased by her loving husband, John, her parents, and her sister, Martha Peaster.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the United Presbyterian Church in Walton, NY.
