Erma B. Hathaway, 103, formerly from Walton and Hamden, died peacefully on May 12, 2014 in Barton, VT. Born to George and Alice (Hunter) Bull in Downsville, NY on August 30, 1910, she graduated from Downsville High School and Oneonta Normal School, where she received her teaching degree. She taught 5th grade for several years throughout Delaware County. On July 14, 1941 she married Orville Hathaway who predeceased her in 1949.

Erma was very active in the Walton United Methodist Church, where she served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years. She was a 4-H leader, tutor, assistant to the village clerk, income tax preparer, and probably best known for her many years as school tax collector. Her hand-written tax rolls were proudly displayed at county assessors' meetings. Erma loved music, family gatherings and, even after moving to Vermont, was a die-hard NY Yankees fan!

Surviving are her children: David (Dorothy) Hathaway of Barton, VT and Jane (Philip) Thorick of Binghamton, NY; her grandsons: Christopher Hathaway of Shelburne, VT, Michael (Melissa) Hathaway of Burlington, VT, and Matthew Leete of Bangkok, Thailand; great-grandchildren: Reid, Iris, and Tyler; also many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings: Norris, Homer, Marvin, Raymon, and Milo Bull, and Elsie (Bull) Wheat.

A celebration of her life was held on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at the Barton United Church. Her interment at the Walton Cemetery will be held at 2 PM on Friday, July 11, 2014.
