Obituary

Evelyn Gadwood Dobmeier, 99 of Walton, passed away at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland, following a short illness.

Evelyn was born on January 6, 1915 in Colchester to the late James Chandler and Sarah Kelly Cable.

Evelyn was married in 1940 in Downsville, NY to Francis Gadwood, former prisoner of war, longtime employee of the Walton Reporter, and library trustee, who predeceased her in 1978. They shared a love of ballroom dancing, as well as annual camping and canoeing trips in the Adirondacks, which they shared with Fresh Air Fund and numerous family and neighborhood children.

Evelyn was later married to Martin H. (Bob) Dobmeier, from 1980 until his death in 1987.

Evelyn received a B.A. degree from Hartwick College, Oneonta, NY and a Master's degree from the State College at Oneonta. Evelyn was a well-known and loved Junior High Social Studies teacher in Walton Central School in the 50's, 60's and early 70's.

Evelyn was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Walton. She was also an active member of many organizations, including the Business and Professional Women's Club of Walton, the Catholic Daughters of America, the Retired Teachers' Association of Delaware County, and the Delaware County Historical Society.

She was predeceased by brothers, Robert S. Cable and Merlin Cable, and sister, Joyce McIntyre. Evelyn had no children. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and a step-granddaughter and great grand-children.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday morning, July 26, 2014 at 11 AM at St. John the Baptist Church, 17 Benton Ave., Walton, with the Rev. Edward Golding, officiating. Burial will follow in Walton Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are with Courtney Funeral Home, Walton.
