Floyd W. Schriber, 88 of Walton, passed away peacefully Monday, September 4, 2006 in Bassett Healthcare Cooperstown, after a short illness.
Floyd was born in the town of Walton, the son of the late James and "Jennie" Sweeney Schriber on September 6, 1917. He was a graduate of Walton Central School, class of 1934. On July 30, 1944 he married the former Arlette Maurer of Walton. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Walton, for many years, serving as Trustee and an Elder. He most recently attended the Northfield Community Church. As a young man, Floyd started doing odd jobs. He then worked in New York City as a railway mail clerk and in 1940 started his career with the United States Postal Service in Walton as a city letter carrier and then transferred to rural carrier, retiring on January 2, 1976. He also had a poultry business with an average of five-thousand layers annually. Floyd and Arlette loved to travel, spending 28 winters in Bradenton, Florida. They also traveled many times to Maine, and Prince Edward Island. They traveled extensively throughout the U.S. with family and friends. Floyd's hobbies included reading, fishing, hunting, and at age 60, golf.
He is survived by his loving wife, Arlette, a son, Danton M. Schriber, a daughter Kathryn S. Cole and her husband, Daniel, both of Walton; 6 grandchildren, David Cole, Deana Stannard, Dulcie Cole, Michael Schriber, Gabriel Sikorsky, Hannah Schriber, 4 great grand-children, a brother in law, Dimitri "Pete" Gallik; several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his beloved "granddog", Brewster. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Art and Charles Schreiber, 2 sisters, Emma Schriber, and Laura Schriber Gallik.
A graveside service will be held at Walton Cemetery at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 9, 2006, with Pastor Don Crossman, and Rev. William Robertson, officiating. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions in Floyd's memory may be made to the Northfield Community Church, 5118 County Rd 23, Walton, NY 13856.
