Obituary

Gary A. Tweedie, 72, a lifelong resident of Walton, passed away unexpectedly early Wednesday morning, September 3, 2014 at Delaware Valley Hospital in Walton.

Gary was born on May 1, 1942 in Walton, the son of the late Walter and Alice (Barnes) Tweedie. He graduated from Walton Central School, class of 1960. On June 16, 1968 he married the former Joan Slauson in Roxbury.

Gary was a self-employed dairy farmer for nearly 20 years, an auctioneer and car dealer. He was a proud member of the Delaware Valley Agricultural Society (Delaware County Fair), where he served the last 40 years as a director and past President. He was the 2001 President of NYS Association of Agricultural Fairs and inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2012. In 2004 he was selected as Fair Person of the Year by the NYS Showpeoples Association. Also in 2004, Gary received the prestigious Heritage Award at the International Association of Fairs and Expositions Convention in Las Vegas which he and his wife Joan had attended for the past 15 years. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, walking and mowing. He took great pride in mowing both sides of MacGibbon Hollow of which he received many compliments. Gary also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren which included taking weekend trips with them. He was most well known as the voice of the Delaware County Fair's demolition derby….."Red flag boys, shut 'em down!!".

Gary is survived by his loving family, his wife, Joan; his children Mark and Peggy Tweedie of Deer Lodge, MT; Jay Tweedie of Walton; Gary and Colleen Tweedie, Jr. of Governeur; Tim and Catherine Tweedie of Walton; Jim and Terri Tweedie of Walton; Melissa Beardslee and Eric Meres of Walton; Ricky and Chanda Tweedie of Unadilla; his "seventh" son, Pat and LuAnn Applegate of Middletown, PA; his grandchildren Austin, Ethan, George, Heather, Xavier, Mia, Sydney, Timothy Jr (TJ), Joshua, Alaina, Morgan, Nick, Aubre, Cortlin, Stephanie and Rachel; his brothers, Dale and Dolores Tweedie of Chenango Bridge; Harold and Pat Tweedie of Penhook, VA; Glenn Tweedie of Deposit; his sister, Sandra and Bill Kerr of Chase Mills, NY; and many special friends.

Friends and family are invited to call on Friday, September 5, 2014 from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm at the New Hope Community Church, 45 Stockton Avenue, Walton, where services will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 3 PM with the Rev. Larry Light officiating. Arrangements are with Courtney Funeral Home, Walton.
