George J. Scherer, 88, a longtime resident of Walton passed away Tuesday evening, March 26, 2013 at Delaware Valley Hospital of Walton, following a long illness.
George was born on January 21, 1925 in New York City, the son of the late Edward and Antoinette (Meyer) Scherer. He was a graduate of Manhattan Technical Institute for architectural and mechanical drafting. He was also a graduate of the New York Botanical Garden for Pratical Gardening". He married the former Pauline Metz on October 11, 1952 in Manhattan. He was employed for many years as a draftsman for Ford Instrument, a division of Sperry Rand. He proudly served his country in the US Army Air Corp during WW II.
George enjoyed driving and family camping trips to Yellowstone, Canada, Lake George, and Pennsylvania Dutch Country. He loved music and could often be found tapping his foot to any tune being played. He also loved singing hymns with his church family at New Hope.
George is survived by his loving family, his wife Pauline, his children, Eric Scherer, Walton, Georgine Scherer, Floral Park; Claudine and Wesley Allen, Binghamton; Joan and Jerry Leonard, Rowlett, Texas; Laure Manette and husband Tom Brown, New Bern, NC; Joel and Dawn Scherer, Whitesboro; Jonathan and Michelle Scherer, Seattle, WA; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a special niece, Marilyn McGhie, New Hyde Park; several nieces, nephews and cousins and his church family at New Hope. He was predeceased by a son Carl Joseph Scherer in 1963 and several brothers and sisters.
Friends and relatives are invited to call on Friday evening, March 29, 2013 from 6 to 8 PM at the New Hope Community Church, 45 Stockton Ave., Walton; where services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1 PM with the Rev. Larry Light, officiating.
Burial will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 1PM at the Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Hope Community Church, 45 Stockton Ave., Walton, NY 13856.
