A remarkable and unforgettable presence with old, deep and fond

connections with Downsville passed from this earth over the

weekend.

Grace W. Machado, 88, died on Saturday, June 8, 2014 at

thePhiladelphia, PA facility of Aria Hospital. Mrs. Machado

had been living with her grandson, Christopher Machado,

at the time of her death.

Mrs. Machado was born in Endicott on March 19, 1926.

During her youth, she spent a good part of her time in

Downsville. During her formative years, she developed a

lasting fondness for what was then the village of Downsville

and of its citizens.

A unique individual in every way, Mrs. Machado retired to

Downsville, the home of her youth. She never lost the feeling

that Downsville was her safe haven, so it was a foregone

conclusion that she ultimately would return to her beloved

hamlet.

She spent her retirement years in Downsville with her

companion, Dr. Margaret Stumpf who predeceased her, and the

duo became familiar figures at the Downsville Diner and the Old

Schoolhouse Inn, as well as at community dinners and the like.

Mrs. Machado continued the practice following Dr. Stumpf's

death.

Never chary about sharing her opinion, Mrs. Machado

eschewed politically correct delivery, to the amusement and

entertainment of those who knew her.

Mrs. Machado had retired from education, enjoying postings in

multiple states, as well as Guam and the Philippines, where she

was an Adminstrator.

Graveside services will be held in Paige Cemetery,

Downsville, on Saturday, June 14 at 2 pm with Fr. Edward J.

Golding of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Walton officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial

contributions go to either Delaware Valley Hospital or the

Downsville Emergency Squad Arrangements are by Courtney

Funeral Home, Walton.
