Obituary

Harold E. "Bud" Caffery, 85, a lifelong resident of Walton, passed away Friday evening, January 19, 2018 at home, following a long illness. Bud was born on April 6, 1932 in Downsville, the son of the late Lester and Mabel (Croop) Caffery. He married the former Helen Jones on December 10. 1955 at Walton. He was employed by Bendix Corp., Sidney, as a Machinist. He was a longtime and faithful member of the First United Methodist Church, Walton where he served as trustee, building and grounds manager and usher. He was also a past and honorary member of the Walton Fire Dept, Company 5, serving as captain. Bud received the Purple Heart medal from freezing wounds in the battle at the Chosin Reservoir in the Korean War in 1950. They were surrounded by 120,000 Chinese Soldiers. The Allies had 15,000 Marines, 15,000 Army and 15,000 United Nations Troops. They finally got out with 98,000 refugees. Bud was treated in an American Hospital in Japan and shipped back to Korea. Bud was a past commander of the Frank Mead Eells Post 270 VFW and a member of the Truman C. Tobey American Legion Post 32 both of Walton. Bud enjoyed helping people in his community. He delivered Meals on Wheels and was awarded a special recognition for his work by Hospice. He loved his family and enjoyed playing pitch, watching his kids and grandkids play baseball, rugby, wrestling and basketball. He also took great pride in his garden and lawn. Bud is survived by his loving family, his wife, Helen, his children, Erick Van Loan, Florida; Fran and Lori Van Loan, Unadilla; Craig Van Loan, California; Wayne and Sharon Caffery, Walton; and Colleen and Brian Becker, Florida; grandchildren, Ashley & Brian, Shelby & Matthew, Pam & Josh, Patrick, Paul & Noreen, Nathan & Vanessa, Christopher & Nicole, Carmen, Ryan & Stacey, Renee' & Tim, Amy & Jason, Justin & Shana, Katrina & Chad; great-grandchildren, Kenley, one on the way, Katie, Sarah, Jason Paul Jr., Samuel, Aiden, Chase, Chrostopher Jr., Angelina, Odinn, Aliyah, Caden, Evan, Elaina, Olivia, Liam, Brycen, Lukin, Jackson, Grayson, Wyatt, Caroline, one on the way, Makaylie; brother, Victor & Patricia Caffery, Walton, brother in law, Bruce Hoyt several nieces, nephews and cousins. Bud was predeceased by a brother, Lester Jr., and a sister, Barbara Hoyt. Friends and relatives are invited to call on Thursday, January 25, 2018 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 26 at the First United Methodist Church, 101 North St., Walton, NY with Pastor Kent Terchunian, officiating. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 12PM at the Walton Cemetery, 55 Fancher Avenue, Walton with full military honors. A luncheon will follow the graveside at the Walton Fire Station. Memorial contributions in Bud's memory may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 101 North St., Walton, NY 13856, Walton Fire Dept., 61 West St., Walton or the Walton Vets Club, 10 Park St., Walton.
