James V. Hurst, Sr., 90, of Hamden passed away on Friday, August 18, 2017 at home following a short illness.
Jim was born on June 22, 1927 in Hoboken, NJ. the son of the late James and Lena (Borelli) Hurst. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. On June 2, 1951 he married the former Edna Smith in Emerson, NJ.
Jim was an Upholsterer for Sleepable Sofa's in Lodi, New Jersey and for himself in Hamden. He never had to advertise because the quality of his work spread near and far. He was a member of the St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Delhi.
Jim really enjoyed playing the saxophone. In his later years he enjoyed golfing with his friends, and he loved watching the New York Yankees.
Jim is survived by his loving family, his wife Edna (Smith) Hurst, James (Jody) V. Hurst, Jr., Rice Lake, Wisconsin; Edna Katherine "Kathy" (John) Frey of Statesboro, GA; Colleen Gagliostro of Washington Township, NJ; William Thomas (Joan) Hurst of Tinton Falls, NJ; grandchildren, Kyle, Kelly, James (Rachel), Erin, Katlin, Teresa, Anthony, Emma, Molly, Morgan, great grandchildren, James Liam, Quinn, sister in law, Mary Ellen (Alan) Boatwright; Marion Hurst of Ramsey, NJ; brother in laws, Frank English of Casselberry, FL; Gayle (Allan) Reynolds of Cocoa, FL; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother, Thomas Hurst, and sister in law, Patricia English.
Family and friends are invited to call on Monday, August 21, 2017 from 4 to 7 PM at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton.
A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday August 22, 2017 at 11:30 AM at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, 8 Franklin Street, Delhi with Rev. Edward J. Golding, officiating. Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at 1PM at George Washington Memorial Park, 234 Paramus Road, Paramus, NJ with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jim's memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.
