January 26, 1936 – December 21, 2014
James H. Northrup 78, passed away after a short illness on Sunday, December 21, 2014 at Wilson Hospital in Johnson City.
Jim was born on January 26, 1936 on the family farm in the Town of Colchester, the fifth child of Frank A. and Florence E. (Jacobson) Northrup. He was married twice, first to Maxine VanLoan in 1955, the mother of his 6 children and then to Irene Jones on December 13, 1997.
Jim was employed at SJ Bailey & Sons after graduating from Walton High School. He then went to work for Barringer's Service Station and eventually bought the business and operated it for many years as Northrup's Gulf Station. He then worked at Northrup Chevrolet Oldsmobile, Walton Farm Supply, and Walton Motors as a car salesman. He retired in 1998 and spent his time refining his woodworking business known as Grandpa's Woodshop. He enjoyed doing lawn sales, caring for his family, drinking coffee and visiting with everyone at the Country Store. Jim reveled in knowing the history of Walton and enjoyed collecting post cards that pertained to Walton. He enjoyed family gatherings and became quite adept at preparing meals for large gatherings.
Jim is survived by his children, Sharon and Mike Harrington of Walton, Gerald and Debbie Northrup of Unadilla, Tom of Trout Creek, Susan and Douglas Earl of Masonville, Sandra Hannon of Walton, 13 grandchildren, Geoff, Farrah, Robbie, Jocelyn, Sean, Jason, Amber, Jonathon, Jessica, Ashley, Michael, Cassie, and Derek as well as 18 great grandchildren, his stepsons, Philip Baxter of Texas, Gary Baxter of Cooperstown, his brothers and their spouses, Howard Neal Northrup, Richard and Cecelia Northrup, Roger and Linda Northrup, and sister in law, Joyce Northrup of Oneonta, his Aunt, Mary Jacobson Allen, and several nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Irene in 2002, his oldest son, David in 1997, his brother, Milton in 2012 his sister, Elinor Northrup in 2013 and ex wife Maxine VanLoan on 2009.
Friends and family are invited to call on Friday, December 26, 2014 from 6 to 8 PM at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton, where services will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 11 AM with the Rev. Bert More, officiating. Burial will follow in Walton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to Walton Fire Department and EMS, 61 West Street, Walton, New York 13856. The Walton Historical Society, 9 Townsend Street, Walton, New York 13856, as well as the area Delaware County Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, New York 13820.
