Obituary

Joan Flostroy Smith, 79, of Killington, Vermont, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, August 4, 2013. She spent her last few months in Franklin, New York at the home of her friend and caregiver Dotty with the help of many close family members.

Joan was born on February 2, 1934 and grew up in Bayside, NY, the daughter of the late Alfred and Mary Louise ( Roemer ) Flostroy. She was a graduate of Bayside High School and Bethany College. She was married to Richard E. Smith In June 1959. They raised their family in Smithtown, New York. Richard passed away in May of 2006.

Joan had an adventurous spirit and spent most of her time in the outdoors, skiing, hiking, biking, kayaking, snow shoeing and sailing. She was a member of the Ski-Daddlers, the Nassau Hiking Club, and the Green Mountain Hiking Club. Joan volunteered her time for many years providing therapy for Parkinson's patients in Smithtown, NY and Rutland, VT. She was a long time member of Smithtown Methodist Church and sang in the choir. Most recently she was a member of the Mendon United Methodist Church in Mendon VT where she also sang in the choir.

She is survived by her three children, Linda (Smith) Erickson and Husband Jim of State College, PA, David Smith and wife Andrea of Stittville, NY, and Steve Smith and wife Kathy of Franklin, NY. Other surviving family members include 7 Grandchildren (Gina, Jaclyn, Steven Jr., Joseph, Noah, Jack, and Carly) and three great grandchildren (David, Judd and Zander). Joan also leaves behind her faithful cat Stormy, who followed her everywhere.

Donations may be made in Joan's name to Catskill Area Hospice in Oneonta NY or to the Rutland County Humane Society in Rutland VT.

A memorial service will be held at a future date to be announced.
