Obituary

John F. "Jack" Hanley, 86, of Walton passed away early Thursday morning, June 9, 2011 at O'Connor Hospital in Delhi, following a long illness.

Jack was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 23, 1924, the son of the late John J and Sarah (Smith) Hanley. During his school years at St. Francis Prep, while in his junior year at age 17, he enlisted in the US Navy, where he was stationed in the South Pacific aboard a destroyer. He was discharged on December 7, 1945 as Gunners Mate 1st Class. On October 4, 1944 he married the former Alice Carolan at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn, for a blessed union of 66 years. Following his service to his country, Jack worked for the NY City Sanitation Dept for 2 years then became a police officer for the City of New York on November 1, 1948. He rose through the ranks to become a police captain and retired in February 1977. Jack continued with his naval service in the US Naval Reserves, retiring after 41 years.

Following retirement, Jack and Alice moved from Rockaway Beach to Walton in 1977 and enjoyed spending winters in Holly Hills, Florida since 1982. While in Florida he volunteered for the AARP as a tax preparer, "Counseling for the Eldery Program". Jack was a member of the Walton and Florida, American Legion and VFW, a member of the Captains Endowment Association, Superior Officer Association, The Fleet Reserve Association, The Naval Enlisted Reserve Association, The Knights of Columbus, and he was a lifetime member of Rockaway Beach Rifle and Pistol Club, NRA and the # 10-13 Club. He was also a former member of the Trout Creek Fire Dept. and EMS. Jack also enjoyed reunions with his " old shipmate buddies." But most of all he loved his family, and enjoyed spending time with them all.

He is survived by his loving family, his wife, Alice, his children, John J. (Claire) Hanley of Long Beach, NY, Alice Lynch of Walton, Gerard (Rita McGee) Hanley of Canton, GA., Joan (Gerard) Nerney of Fresh Meadows, Eileen Smart of Albany, NY, Joseph Hanley of Walton, NY, Patrick (Marcia) Hanley of Walton, his 18 grandchildren, JulieAnn, Jennifer, Jay, Joseph, Patricia, Jacqueline, Francis, John, James, Gerard, Christine, Jason, Allison, Tara, Robert, Sarah, Patrick, and Phillip, 19 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by a daughter, Jacqueline in 2008, brothers, Joseph, Francis and Robert and sister, Patricia.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on Sunday, June 12, 2011 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday morning at 9 AM at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 17 Benton Ave., Walton, with the Rev. Edward Golding, officiating. Burial will follow in Walton Cemetery with full military honors.
