Dr. John A. Tusch, 88 of Havens Corners Road died Tuesday Sept. 23.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday Sept .25 at Weidon Funeral Home, 102 East Main St., Penn Yan.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday Sept. 27 at Penn Yan United
Methodist Church. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery Penn Yan. Memorial
donations may be made to Lake Keuka Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA).
John was born Aug. 10, 1920, the son of Herman and Maria Scholts Tusch. John met his wife, Evelyn in 1942 while both were attending Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis Mo. He began practicing in 1944 in Macedon and moved to Penn Yan in 1959, where he continued his practice until retirement in 1986.
John was a family man through and through and will be greatly missed by his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
He held several elected positions in the area and supported many local organizations.
He was a Penn Yan Village Trustee for four years and Mayor for eight years. He served six years on the Yates County Legislature, including four years a vice-chairman and was a Yates County Republican Committee member for over 30 years, serving as chairman for eight years. He also was a Republican State Committeeman from Yates County, delegate from the Seventh Judicial District, chairman of the Town of Benton Republican Committee and served as a Yates County Coroner for about 12 years.
He was a lifetime member and past president of the Lake Keuka Chapter, IWLA; past president of the staet division of teh IWLA; served on the national board of directors of the IWLA and a member of S.C.O.P.E.
In the past, he was a member of the state Fish and Wildlife Management Board (FWMB), vice chair of the Region 8 FWMB, a member of the Yates County Federation of Sportsman's Clubs, director of the American Wildlife Research Foundation, member of the Open Space Advisory committee, Yates County Water Resources Alliance Committee and the Environmental Advisory Committee of the Keuka Outlet Trail.
He was a member of the Penn Yan United Methodist Church, Penn Yan Rotary (past president), Elks, Masonic Lodge, Grange (past master and executive committee member), Yates County Chamber of Commerce (two terms as chair).
He is survived by children, John D. (Dianna) Tusch of Penn Yan, Douglas A. (Diane) Tusch of Hemlock, Judith (Paul) Rogers of Michigan, Peggy Fabrizio of Katonah, Betty J. (Stephen) Castner of Penn Yan; 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Jennie Newmiller of Austin Texas, a brother, Claire (Judy) Tusch of Maine, and a close friend, Beverly White of Hornell. John was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn in 1995, a grandson, Jeffrey Burdick; sister, Frances Burnett; brother, Gerard Tusch; brother, Robert Tusch; and son-in-law, Douglas Burdick.
