Josephine L. Marlett, 90, passed away on Monday afternoon, March 23, 2009, at her home after a short illness.
She was born in Walton on January 16, 1919, the youngest daughter of the late Thomas and Rosaria Palazzo Latronica.
Josie Graduated from Walton High School, Class of 1936 and from Oneonta Normal School (now SUNY Oneonta) in 1940. Josie taught school in one-room district schools for 3 years and later was a bank teller at the National Bank of Delaware County for 5 years.
On October 1948 she married Howard Hendee. For 21 years Josie and Howard were co-partners in owning and operating Hendee's Market (present location of Townsend Street Market.) Howard predeceased her in 1969. She later married Stanley Marlett in 1970. He predeceased her in 1977.
In later years Josie was employed at the Walton Pharmacy until her retirement.
She was a member of the Walton First United Methodist Church for over 50 years, United Methodist Women, receiving the UMW Mission Award in 2002, active member of Willowemoc Downsville Chapter #304 Order of Eastern Star. Volunteer at Delaware Valley Hospital, she received Woman of the Year for Walton Business & Professional Women in 1997 and was active in other community organizations.
Josie enjoyed family, friends, bowling, knitting, reading, crossword puzzles and traveling.
She is survived by a stepson Lloyd (Irene) Marlett of Walton; step granddaughter Karen Marlett of Connecticut; step grandson Christopher (Jill) Marlett of Walton; Step great-granddaughter Alexis Marlett of Walton; nephews, Charles (Vi) Fiumera of Walton, John (Betty) Adams of South Kortright, James (Rose) Adams of Stamford, Francis Brewary of Washington DC, Anthony Latronica of Chicago, IL, Patrick Latronica Jr. of Rome, Italy; nieces, Rose Linda (Darrel) Randall of New Mexico and Rose Brewary Mullineaux of Tampa, FL; and many great, great great and great, great great nieces and nephews and cousins.
Besides her 2 husband and parents, Josie was predeceased by her sisters Rachel Fiumera, Giovanna "Jennie" Brewary, Mary Adams; brothers, Patrick and Anthony Latronica.
Friends and relatives are invited to call on Thursday, March 26, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday morning, March 27, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church, 101 North Street, Walton, with the Rev. Mark Del Giudice officiating. Burial will follow at Walton Cemetery.
