Lionel R. Estes, 92, a longtime resident of Walton, passed away on Sunday evening, August 14, 2011 at the home of his daughter, Dianne in Pittsford, NY.
Lionel was born on September 13, 1918, the son of the late Robert and Helena (Barnard) Estes in Oswayo, PA. He was married to the former Doris Spafard on September 20, 1945. She died on April 8, 2001.
Lionel was a highly decorated combat veteran of World War II, first in the European Theater of Operations, specifically, Normandy, the Rhineland and later in the Pacific Theater, where he received three Purple Hearts and three Bronze Stars. He was a retired rural letter carrier, retiring from the Walton Post Office, following over 30 years of service. He was also a faithful member of the Congregational Church of Walton for many years.
Lionel enjoyed his summers at his camp in Canadarago Lake in Richfield Springs and his dog Toby.
He is survived by his daughter Dianne Leonard of Pittsford, NY, and son John (Susan) Estes of Liverpool, NY, a step mother, Ethel Estes of Oxford, a brother Gerald (June) of Fabius, NY, a sister-in-law, Marion Gavett of Bloomville, NY, two grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Doris, a son William, a brother Robert in World War II, his sister June, and a grandson, Scotty Leonard in 2001.
A graveside service with full Military Honors will be held at 1 PM on Friday afternoon, August 19, 2011 at Walton Cemetery with the Rev. Jennifer Kimball, officiating. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are with Courtney Funeral Home, Walton.
