Lloyd E. Backus, 80, of Sidney Center passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at home.

Lloyd was born on September 29, 1936 born on the farm in Cannonsville, the son of the late Leon and Alice (Brundege) Backus. He was the second of eleven children. He grew up on the family farm and he attended Deposit Central School. Lloyd proudly served his country in the United States Army where he was stationed in France.

Lloyd married Mary Elizabeth Griffin on August 3, 1958. They enjoyed 57 years together before Mary predeceased him on May 3, 2015. He was employed by Amphenol Corp for over 40 years. He also was a Justice for the Town of Tompkins for 36 years, a member of the American Legion Post #1554, and a member of the Trout Creek Volunteer Fire Department where he was treasurer for many years.

He enjoyed being outside working in the yard and taking care of his chickens, going to the Amish Country, NASCAR races, and adding to his John Deere collection. His most prized possession was his family.

Lloyd is survived by his children; Pam Lakin (Tim), Sam Backus (Tania), Patricia Gardepe (Ron) and Peggy Backus, grandchildren, Matthew and Jessica Lakin, Daniel and Robert Gardepe, Dexter Backus, Nathaniel Gardepe, Mallory Sprague, Tyler and Logan Knapp, and Austin Gardepe, great grandchildren, Aubree, Emmett, and Abigail, and a new one to arrive any day, his brothers, and sisters, Ruth, Jayne, Ed, Marion, Margie, Rose, Janet, and Jim. He was also a special person in the lives of Pat Backus, Cindy Jump, and Tawaina Gaines. A thank you to our friends Charlie and Mary Lou Koehler for all the time and friendship they have given him over the last few weeks. He was predeceased by his brothers, Robert and Andrew.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 11:00AM at the Carroll Cemetery in Trout Creek, NY with the Rev. David Gatje, officiating. Arrangements are with Courtney Funeral Home, Walton. There will be a gathering at the Trout Creek Fire Hall following the service.
