IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lula B.
Davis
June 25, 1931 – November 15, 2015
Lula B. Davis of Walton died Sunday morning, November 15, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.
Lula was born in Walton on June 25, 1931, to Elizabeth and William Hobbie. She graduated from the old Walton High School on Townsend Street on her seventeenth birthday. While in school and beyond, she was quite a fine athlete. In fact, when they were children, Lula and her sister Doris were purportedly highly sought-after for the boys' sandlot baseball games. Apparently they surpassed many of the boys!
Lula married William E. Davis on February 19, 1949. They enjoyed fifty-eight years of marriage.
Although she held other jobs through the years, her longest employment was her 20+ years as the bookkeeper at the local A&P store, working there until it closed in the mid-70s. During her lifelong residence in Walton, she was involved in bowling leagues (including traveling leagues), was a highly-skilled knitter, and was an active participant in the afternoon coffee group at McDonald's. In later years, particularly since Bill's death in August of 2007, Lula became an avid reader, often devouring 3 or 4 books per week.
Although she had a great sense of humor, she had a tough time keeping up with Bill. She seemed to enjoy her "straight man" role, however.
But Lula's greatest love was her family. She grew up as the youngest of six children, but the family she created with Bill was a small, tight-knit group.
Lula is survived by her only child Brenda (Chris) Beswick of Queensbury; grandson Anthony (Katherine) Beswick of Henderson, Nevada; grandson Adam Beswick of Queensbury; sister Doris Hobbie of Walton; special nephew William (Sharon) Hobbie of Walton; several other nieces and nephews; and numerous dear friends.
Friends and relatives are invited to call at the Courtney Funeral Home at 25 Townsend Street in Walton on Friday evening, November 20, 2015, from 4 to 7 PM. A memorial service will be held at that site on Saturday, November 21, at 11AM, with the Rev. Larry Light officiating. Burial of Lula's and Bill's remains will follow immediately at the Walton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Lula's memory can be made to either the Walton Fire Department/EMS, 61 West Street, Walton, NY 13856, or Enhanced DVH (hospital), 1 Titus Place, also in Walton.
