Maria Contello, 94, a resident of Walton, passed away Monday, June 20, 2011 at Roscoe Community Nursing Home in Roscoe, due to complications from cancer of the gall bladder.

Marie was born on January 7, 1917 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of the late Ralph and Rose (Langella) Carbone. On April 20, 1941 she married Anthony Contello in Brooklyn. They raised their family in Franklin Square, NY, and later moved to Walton, NY. He died in 1998. Marie was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Walton, and a life member of the Christian Mothers at her former parish,St. Catherine of Siena, in Franklin Square, NY.

Marie was a homemaker who loved and enjoyed her family. She enjoyed going to the casinos in Monticello and Atlantic City. She was very social and always loved visiting with her friends at Papa's Diner over a cup of coffee.

Marie is survived by her loving family: Her sons Anthony (Jane) Contello of Walton and Thomas (Donna) Contello of Shirley, NY; her grandchildren, Mary (John) Phraner, Walton; Anthony C. (Jennifer) Contello, Pavilion, NY; Thomas Contello Jr., Shirley; great-grandchildren Colby Phraner, Gabriella and Natalie Contello; her friend Murray Wax, who was like a brother, of Provincetown, MA; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her brothers Anthony, Joseph, John and Ralph Carbone, and her sisters Biondina "Anna" Cangianello and Marie "Jean" Graganella.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on Friday, June 24, 2011 from 2 to 4PM and 6 to 8 PM at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 10 AM at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 17 Benton Avenue, Walton. Burial will be held at 1 PM on Monday, June 27, 2011 in Holy Rood Cemetery, 111 Old Country Road, Westbury, New York.
