MAX ELMER HUGHES passed away unexpectedly Monday night April 14, 2008.
He was born on Nov. 22, 1921 to Clarence Moses Hughes and Elizabeth Lizzy Ping in Exline Iowa.. He moved with his family to Ruth Ky. as a child, and graduated Shopville High School in 1940. He enlisted in the U.S Navy that same year and proudly served on several ships including the USS Augusta.
Upon returning to civilian life in 1947 he relocated to New York City. He began a career with Consolidated Edison company in a coal powered electric plant and worked his way up to a Class A Nuclear Operator at Indian Point 1 & 2 Power Stations. He retired in 1981 and moved with his wife to Walton N.Y. He loved to tinker with old cars and was especially proud of his 1931 Model A Ford which he owned for over 50 years. Max was a member of the Walton Masonic Lodge. He was recently honored by Walton Meals on Wheels for 25 years of volunteer service.
In N.Y. he is sadly missed by his wife of 55 years, Helen, and his children and families: John ( Marian )of Walton NY., Roberta ( Dan ) Beany of Warwick NY.,Gerald ( Michelle ) of Rock Tavern NY., Robert ( Liz ) of Wilmington NY., and 6 grand children, and 2 great grand children.
In Kentucky he is sadly missed by his brothers and their families: Gerald Warren Hughes of Ruth Ky., and Robert Elton Hughes (Verda Mae ) of Ruth Ky. He was predeceased by siblings: Harold Hughes, Cyril Hughes, Nora Blanche Hughes, and Clarence Hughes Jr.
A viewing will be held on Thursday April 17, 2008 from 1:00 to 3:00pm immediately followed by a memorial service at the Clark Winter Courtney Funeral Home, Townsend St. Walton NY. He will be cremated and his ashes interred at the Keeney Cemetery in Ruth Ky. at 11am Tuesday April 22, 2008. Reverend Bradley will preside.
