Merton E. Scott, 74 a life long resident of Walton, passed away Saturday afternoon, July 15, 2006 in A. O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta, after a long illness.
Mert was born in Walton, on the family farm on Dunk Hill, on February 28, 1932, the son of the late Julian and Beatrice Bartlett Scott. He was a graduate of Walton Central School, class of 1950. He also attended Broome Community College. He married the former Uva Tweedie in September 1969. He was self employed, establishing Scott Machine Co. Mert was an ingenious man who could see a problem and develop a machine that would solve it. He invented , among other things, a variable speed drill, a clam opener, an electric garage door opener, and a lumber lift. He was also famous for his bar-b-que sauce, often hosting cook outs for his friends and family. Mert was a charter member of the Walton Mountain Sportsman Club, and a member of the Royale Oasis.
He is survived by his wife, Uva; a step daughter, Belinda Sill, of Laurens; his "honorary son" Danny Hodges, and his wife Vinnie, 2 step grandchildren, Conner Kilmer, and Miranda Terry; a sister, Beverly Bogart, and her husband, Samuel, of Apalachin, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, David and Roland "Corky" Scott; 3 sisters, Dorothy Sparling, Evelyn "Red" Scott, and Mildred Wilhite.
.Friends and relatives are invited to call on Tuesday evening, July 18, 2006 from 6 to 8 PM at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, Walton
A graveside service, will be held at Walton Cemetery on Wednesday morning at 10 AM.
Memorial contributions in Mert's memory may be made to Walton EMS or Catskill Area Hospice. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available by contacting the funeral home.
