Obituary

Merv A. Conklin, 94 of Walton a long time dairy farmer, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City.

Merv was born on July 5, 1920 in Shavertown, the son of the late Benjamin and Margaret (Davis) Conklin. On May 13, 1944 he married the former Elizabeth J. Nichols soon after they moved to Walton where Merv worked for Lawrence DuMond. In of 1950, they purchased a farm on West Brook Road, Walton were they raised eight children and award winning Holstein dairy cattle. Mervin was a 50 plus year member of the New York State Holstein Association. He was a long time member and served as president of the Delaware County Holstein Club. Mervin and Elizabeth were members of the Plymouth Church, 4-H leaders of the Westbrook Hayseeders, and members of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County for many years. After retiring from farming, he built two houses and a cabin.

Mervin and Elizabeth enjoyed spending their winter months in Florida and their travels throughout the USA and abroad. During Merv's life he was a carpenter, electrician, farmer, refrigeration repair person, husband, dad, grandfather and friend.He loved going up the hill to the pond and having a picnic at the "Honeymoon Cabin". Merv enjoyed 94 years on this earth, looking after 8 children, barns full of cows, beautiful gardens, and more grandchildren and great-grandchildren than you can count.

Merv is survived by his loving family, his children, Mary Elizabeth and Gerry Walker of Walton;

James and Jackie Conklin of Walworth, NY; William Mervin Conklin of California; Robert and Pamela Conklin of Walton; Barbara J Palmer of Sidney Center, NY; Christine Emma and David Walker of Norwich, NY; Donald and Beth Conklin of Walton; his 20 grandchildren, his 38 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, his sister, Hazel Filupeit of Conn.; his sisters in law, Helen Nichols,Franklin; and Evie Conklin of Pennsylvania; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth of 66 years in 2010, his daughters, Patricia Crandall and Catherine Conklin, his brothers, Floyd, John, and Howard Conklin, his sister, Emma Barnes.

The family would like to acknowledge and give special thanks to their dad's caregiver, Deanna O'Conner, for the loving care she gave our father during his last couple of years. Deanna was blessing not only to dad, but to the family as well.

Friends and family are invited to call on Friday evening, August 1, 2014 from 6 to 8PM at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton. A graveside service will be held 9:30 AM on Saturday, August 2 at Walton Cemetery, 55 Fancher Avenue, Walton, with Pastor. Tom Davis, officiating. In lieu of flowers,the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5 Oak St., Sidney, NY 13838, or to a charity of ones choice.
