Merwin J. (Slim) Wright, 92, of Walton passed away Friday, October 25, 2013 at his home in Walton, NY.
Merwin was born on June 2, 1921 in Newark, NJ the son of the late Herbert L. and Elvera Grace (Tate) Wright. On August 7, 1955 he married the former Elizabeth McGonegal in Pine Bush, NY.
Merwin served in the Army Air Corps. He was employed by City Of New York, Board of Water Supply as an Prof. Engineer & Licensed Surveyor. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers, NY State Society of Professional Land Surveyors, American Concrete Institute, Catskill Area Association of Land Surveyors, Walton Fire Department, Commissioner of the Walton Fire District, AFSCME, Delaware Valley Hospital Board of Trustees, Order of the Arrow- Boy Scout Troop 87, and the Civil Service Technology Guild.
Slim built his own home, laid the stone and flooring with his two bare hands. He was in charge of building the spillway in Downsville on the Pepacton Reservoir and the Roundout. Mr. Wright enjoyed hunting, long range shooting (He once shot a deer at 605 yards), and traveling around the country.
Merwin is survived by his family, his wife, Elizabeth, his daughter, Elizabeth (John) Sheffer of Stafford, VA; his sons, Thomas (Melissa) Wright of Boerne, TX; and Michael (Suzanne) J. Wright of Lewisburg, PA. his grandchildren, Christopher, Hilary, Katherine, Michael, Matthew, Sara, Elizabeth(Kevin), Ethan and Evan his brothers, Russell (Marsha) Wright of Pine Bush, NY; Herbert (Eleanor) Wright of Buford, GA; Duncan Lay of Pine Bush, NY; Michael (Marilyn) Lay of Apopka, FL; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends and family are invited to call on Saturday, November 2, 2013 from 11AM to 12Noon at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton where a prayer service will be held at 12:30PM with the Rev. Edward J. Golding, Officiating. Burial will follow in the Walton Cemetery, 55 Fancher Avenue, Walton.
