Obituary

Paul I. Doig, 81 of Downsville passed away on July 29, 2017 at Samuel Stratton VA Medical Center, following a long illness.

Paul was born on June 18, 1936 in Downsville, the son of the late Elmer and Christina (Conklin) Doig. He was a graduate of Downsville Central School, class of 1953. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army from 1960 to 1966.

On June 20, 1986 he married the former Alfretta "Sis" Murphy at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Downsville. He was owner and operator of Doig Excavating in Downsville for many years before turning it over to David in the 1990's.

Paul was a longtime member of the Downsville Fire Department where he served as Chief for many years. Holding this office he started the EMS in Downsville and was also one of the first instructors for the county. He was one of the men who started the Downsville Field Days, and they purchased the Fireman's Field and paid for it from what they earned from the field days the first two years.

Paul started racing with his brother in law, Bob Butcher in the 50 plus running the #2, #22 and #37. He won many races, most at Five Mile Point. Every year he went to the old times night and looked forward to seeing all the old drivers. His son started racing in the 1980's as a family everyone went to Five Mile Point evert Saturday night. He loved to watch David race and now watch David Jay race. He also liked to watch Jake race his snowmobile on the ponds. Racing was an important part of his life.

Paul is survived by his loving family, his wife, Sis, children, Colleen Collins, Paul "Sparky" Doig, Jr., Lisa (Steve) Peaster, David Doig, Denise (Tim) Murphy, Dennis (Jackie) Murphy, grandchildren, Derrick (Julie) Peaster, Katelynn Peaster, Jessica, Jeremy Collins, Curtis Swarts, Kevin and David Doig, Jake Murphy, 6 great grandchildren, sisters, Joyce (Dick) Webler and Louise Gregor and many nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Roland "Skeeter" Doig.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 10 AM at the Colchester Community Methodist Church, 15151 State Highway 30, Downsville, with the Pastor Kent Terchunian, officiating. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are with Courtney funeral home, Walton.
