Obituary

Peter Alvin Huyler died on January 3rd, 2014 at 2:04pm at home with his loving wife and cats.

Pete was born in Tenefly, New Jersey on April 5th, 1932. His family relocated to Franklin, New York when he was fourteen after his dad retired. He graduated as Valedictorian from the Franklin School and attended Cornell University Veterinary College where he met and married Margaret Rogers in 1954. He graduated Cornell in 1956 and opened a large animal practice in Walton serving Delaware and other surrounding counties. He was sought- after as a vet for his comforting presence, his veterinary acumen, and his comedic wit. In his travels, he was able to touch many lives, both human and animal.

Peter dedicated over thirty years of volunteer services to the community. He was a board member of the Delaware County Historical Society and he served on the Walton Central School District Board of Education from July 1963 through June 1980. During this time, he served as president for fifteen years. He also served thirteen plus years on the BOCES Board while maintaining a full- time practice as a doctor of veterinary medicine. In addition to this, he was the Area 8 Director of the New York State School Association for many years where he also served as President. Peter has been honored with several public education awards recognizing his outstanding commitment to education and the youth of the state of New York. Peter was a fifty- five-year member of the First Congregational Church, where he served as a Deacon. He considered the church members to be his extended family.

Peter is predeceased by his first wife; Margaret Huyler, his daughter; Louise Huyler Halley, and his grandchild; Peter Huyler. Peter is survived by his children; Duncan Huyler, Timothy Huyler, and Susan Bomalaski, his grandchildren; Nicholas Bomalaski, Rachael Bomalaski, Connor Huyler, Garrett Huyler and Kathleen Halley, his great grandchild; Mariposa Bomalaski- Sandoval, his nieces; Haila VanHentenryck, Gracesa VanHentenryck, Jane Fisher Lewis, Nancy Lewis, Melissa Rogers and Carolyn Huyler, his nephews Robert Rogers, Jim Lewis and John Lewis, his sisters- in- law; Gina VanHentenryck, Betts Parillo, his brother- in- laws; George Rogers and Kevin VanHentenryck, his long time friend; Betty Moore, and his wife; Nina Pfeffer.

Peter Huyler was an incredible human being who was adored and well- loved by many. He was honest, generous, and enriched the lives of all who knew him. Those close with him frequently heard him recite various bits of humorous witticisms, poems and songs. We would like to remember him with this song he used to sing;

Oh, Lord it's hard to be humble,

When you're perfect in every way.

I can't wait to look in the mirror,

'Cause I get better looking each day.

To know me is to love me,

I must be a hell of a man.

Oh, Lord it's hard to be humble,

But I'm doin' the best that I can.
