Phyllis M. Williams, 87, a longtime resident of Walton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, March 10, 2015 at Norwich Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Norwich, NY.

Phyllis was born July 1, 1927 in Chaumont, the daughter of the late Philip and Ethel (Ullman) Merchant. On July 9, 1955 she married Richard Williams in Cape Vincent; a loving marriage until his death on March 17, 2010.

Phyllis graduated from Syracuse University College of Nursing in 1949. In 1952 she was hired as an RN- School Nurse at Walton Central School with the responsibility of 20 one-room schools as well as the three buildings in town. She stopped work for 10 years to raise her family and continue her education. Phyllis then continued her employment at Walton Central School as a school nurse-teacher. She was a faithful member of Christ Episcopal Church in Walton. Phyllis volunteered at the various Blood Banks in the area and was a member of many quilting groups. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, tatting, making peanut brittle, and freezing and canning the vegetables from her garden. If her hands were busy, she was happy.

Phyllis is survived by her loving family, her children; Ann (Wood) Markham of Norwich, her son Thomas Williams, and daughter-in-law Janet of Walton, her grandchildren; Lindsey and Casey Markham of Norwich, Nathan and Ashley Williams of Walton, great-grandchildren; Kennedy and Elijah Williams, Cameron, Ashton, and Carson Schofield, her sisters; Emelie (William) Cuppernell of Chaumont, and Elinor Skinner of Naples, Florida, her brother; Dr. James (Ila) Sterling of Canandaigua, her special niece, Marilyn (Ron) Olson of Fairport and Walton, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her son Robert, sister Nathalie and step mother Vera Merchant.

A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 11:30AM at Christ Episcopal Church, 41 Gardiner Place, Walton with Rev. R. L. Donahue, officiating.
