Obituary

Robert S. Cable, 94, of River Road in Downsville, NY died peacefully at O'Connor Hospital in Delhi, NY of natural causes on September 26, 2013.

Bob was born June 26, 1919 in Colchester, NY to James Chandler Cable and Sarah Kelly Cable. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Merlin Cable, sister Joyce McIntyre, and is survived by his sister Evelyn Gadwood Dobmeier, 98. Bob was married to Marjorie Townsend Cable on October 19, 1940. She predeceased him March 17, 1983.

He is also survived by his children, Sandra (George) Walker, Brookfield, CT; Robert (Lynda) Cable, East Branch, NY; Cheryl (Harold) Ford, Monterey, VA; and Neil (Lisa) Cable, Walton, NY. Bob has 15 grandchildren, 30 great grand children and 1 great great grandchild.

Bob was born and raised in the Downsville area and spent all of his life in the community. He and Marge went to high school together, married, raised four children while being active in the community as bank director and on the Board of Education.

He started his career participating in Roxbury, NY at the Cable's Cattle Auction. He and his brother Merlin worked together every week along with his Dad and his Mom who ran the restaurant adjacent to the Auction. He started dairy farming in the late 1940's up on Gregory Hollow while still involved in the Cattle Auction business and began auctioneering at household auctions.

He was also proud of growing corn and hay and over the years won awards for the excellence of his corn and hay crops. He integrated his sons, Bob and Neil into the dairy farming business as they were growing up and they eventually became dairy farmers in the area.

Bob was also an avid deer hunter and the house at Gregory Hollow and eventually on River Road was always overflowing with family and deer hunters during the season. They came from all over the state and it turned into a big event!! It didn't matter if you got a deer as long as you were having a good time.

Bob eventually turned the Gregory Hollow Farm over to his sons, moved to his family homestead with Marge on River Road. There he established Cable's Auction Barn and he and Marge began their antique business and auction. Almost every holiday weekend an auction was going full force with cars parked everywhere. He recruited his children, grandchildren, and friends to be a part of the process. He also became a justice of the peace during that time and took up golf. During that time he was the cable guy for the community cable system.

After Marge died he started traveling a bit more visiting his family in Florida or Connecticut. As Bob aged and slowed down, he closed down the auction/antique business and seriously turned to golf. He had his own driving range and putting green out behind the house. If you drove by you could see him either mowing the fairway or hitting golf balls with his friend and companion, Stormin' Norman, fat cat!! He cut, split and stacked firewood to heat the house every summer. And if you walked down the street or were in a store and heard someone whistling or singing, you knew it was Bob Cable.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 from 5 to 8 PM at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton, NY.

Funeral services will be held at the Colchester Community Church, Downsville, NY., on Thursday morning, October 3, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow at Paige Cemetery.
