Obituary

Robert Douglas Sulger 83, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2010 to be with his Lord at home with his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Jones Sulger.

He was born April 8, 1927 in Walton, NY, the son of William and Velma (Goodrich) Sulger.

Robert was a WWII Navy man, given special recognition for steering the USS North Carolina into harbor through dense fog. Following discharge he returned to Walton working at the Walton Reporter as a tintype man. It was there he saw Elizabeth for the first time. As the story goes he dropped a set tray as she walked past having to redo the type. Robert had his pilots' license and owned his own plane. He sold the airplane to buy his love of his heart a diamond. Robert and Elizabeth were married August 15, 1948.

He attended Toccoa Falls Bible College for one year then transferred to Nyack Missionary College for another year. He returned to Walton and worked at Amphenol and USPS as a rural mail carrier until his retirement.

Robert was an elder and Sunday school teacher at the Alliance Church for many years, also very active in church planting and youth work. Following his retirement he enjoyed gardening, traveling and remained so interested in the history of Walton. He took photos of our hills, barns, and eagles to enter in exhibit at the Delaware County Fair. His greatest pride though was spending time with his family.

Besides his wife Elizabeth he is survived by twin daughters; Shirley (Dale) Estus, Sharlene Sulger Murray, a son; Timothy (Debra) Sulger, 14 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, a sister; Elizabeth Fox, California; and two brothers; John (Betty) Sulger, North Carolina and William (Anna) Sulger, Walton. He was predeceased by a sister Margaret Hogan and a brother Victor Sulger.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on Friday, October 15, 2010 from 1 to 2 at the Riverside Alliance Church, 110 Stockton Avenue, Walton, New York where funeral services will be held at 2:00PM. Burial will follow in Walton Cemetery.
