Sherman William "Bill" Van Ness Jr., 72, of Walton and formerly of Uniondale, NY passed away on August 9, 2014 unexpectedly at home.

Bill was born on April 23, 1942 the son of the late Sherman W. and Dorothy (Parish) Van Ness. On November 8, 1970 he married the former Merrianne Gomer in Uniondale, NY.

Bill proudly served his country in the US Army from 1961 to 1963. He was a retired police officer for Nassau County in Bayport, NY. He was a member of the Uniondale Fire Department where he served as Captain.

Bill is survived by his loving family, his wife, Merianne, his children, Tracy and Brian (Rachael), his sisters, Evelyn Laky and Dorothy Repass, his grandchildren, Madelyn, Bradley, Jackson, and Olivia.

Friends and the family are invited to call on Sunday, August 17, 2014 at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton from 12 Noon to 1PM where services will be held at 1PM with the Rev. Dale Ashby, officiating.
