Shirley M. Gabel, 91, of Walton passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Roscoe Community Nursing Home, following a long battle with PLS.

Shirley was born on May 9, 1925 in Scranton, PA., the daughter of the late Charles and Grace (Mott) Cottle. On December 15, 1946 she married John M. Gabel at Park Avenue Methodist Church, New York City. He died on March 3, 2008.

Shirley was a member of Walton United Presbyterian Church, American Quilters Society, Delaware County Cooperative Extension, 4-H Farm Bureau, and Westbrook Homemakers. She worked at Del-Met for many years doing payroll, and later worked with her husband John selling real estate and they were vendors at the Delhi Farmer's Market until their retirement in 2006. She loved to read and learn, she enjoyed quilting, feeding the birds, and cooking, and baking for her family and friends.

Shirley is survived by her loving family, her daughter, Lorraine (Bruce) Kellogg of Bainbridge; John Gabel, Jr. of Wallkill; Douglas (Kristin) Gabel of Thomasville, PA; Stephen Gabel of Walton; grandchildren, Christopher (Elizabeth) Gabel, William Gabel, Kyle (Stephanie) Gabel, Evan Gabel, David (Kristyn) Kellogg, Katie (Hugo) Campos, great grandchildren, Jackson Gabel and Charlotte Kellogg, and several nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters and brothers, Pearl, Margaret, Dorothy, Ruth, Charles, William, James, Jack, and Robert.

Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday, December 11, 2016 from 1 to 2 PM at the United Presbyterian Church, 58 East Street, Walton, where a memorial service will be held at 2 PM with the Rev. Dr. Lisa Ruth Mays, officiating. Arrangements are with Courtney Funeral Home, Walton.
