Obituary

Stephen Joseph DeGroat, a former resident of Pelham Manor, NY, passed away peacefully at Wilson Hospital, Johnson City, New York on Saturday, October 12, 2019 following a long illness. Stephen was born in Cooperstown, New York on July 1, 1949 to Catherine A. (Flannery) and Arthur W. DeGroat. He attended Stamford Central School and graduated from Fordham University in 1971, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics.

A loving husband, father, brother, uncle and grand uncle, he leaves behind his wife Iris of 35 years, son James of Queens, NY and daughter Kathryn DeGroat, MD, of Albany, NY; also, sisters Patricia (Francis) Brissette of Boylston, MA and Catherine DeGroat (Mark Levin) of Milford, CT; brothers Robert (Angela) of Fayetteville, NY; Michael (Jean) of Walton, NY; and John (Shariffah) of Singapore. He also leaves extended family in New York, Florida, and Puerto Rico.

Stephen worked early on at East River Savings Bank as a branch manager and then later went to work as an investigator for the NYS Office of Special Prosecutor investigating nursing home fraud. He was instrumental in the prosecution of nursing home administrators in the mid-1970s. Stephen became an investment banker and worked at Drexel Burnham Lambert, Smith Barney, and Guilford Securities. He was President and CEO of Broadmark Capital and, following 9/11, took over the securities firm Jessup and Lamont until 2006. During his career he was responsible for the public offerings of Patterson Energy and Green Mountain Coffee. His profession required that he travel frequently in the U.S. and to China, Brazil and Nicaragua.

Stephen loved the outdoors. He was an avid golfer and fly fisherman, enjoying many fishing excursions to Roscoe, New York. He was a supporter of Stamford's junior golf program and was past president of Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle, NY.Stephen will be dearly missed by family and friends and will be always in our hearts.

Calling hours to which relatives and friends are invited to attend will be held on Friday, October 18, 2019 from 6-8 P.M. at Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 19, 2019 at 11 A.M. at Sacred Heart Church, 27 Harper Street, Stamford with Rev. Edward J. Golding officiating. Please assemble at church. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, 3 Mountain Avenue, Stamford.
