Obituary

Theodore Webb "Ted" Millspaugh, 88, of Hillsborough, NH died in the early morning of Thursday, March 6, 2025, at Concord Memorial Hospital.

Ted was born in Brooklyn, NY to Theodore and Katherine (Crawford) Millspaugh.  He grew up in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ and was the oldest of their four children.  He spent many fond summers playing baseball and working on his Uncle Donnie Crawford's farm in Hamden, NY.

Ted graduated from Ridgewood High School in New Jersey in 1954 and earned a college degree from Wesleyan University in 1958.  While at Wesleyan he lettered in both baseball and soccer.   Ted later earned a Masters in Business Administration from Rutgers Graduate School of Management and served his country in the NJ Army National Guard.

Ted began his professional career in accounting with Price Waterhouse in New York City, then was promoted and transferred to Syracuse, NY.  He later transitioned from auditing to financial management becoming the Comptroller of Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS) in Rutland, VT.   He continued to work in accounting and financial management roles until his official retirement in January 2025.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ted was dedicated to community service.  He served on several nonprofit boards, including the Rutland Rotary Club, Pico Ski Club, Rutland Area Hockey Association, Rutland Hospital Board, Shelbourne Corporation (owner of Killington Ski Association) and the Hillsborough Environmental Protection Board.

Ted married Colby Gage Smith, from Winneka, Il, who he met while in college after being introduced to Colby by her brother, Weldon Smith.  Ted and Colby shared a loving partnership and raised three children together.  Ted was a devoted father and took great joy in supporting his children's passions.  He remained athletically involved by skiing, playing tennis and softball well into his later years and even delighted in earning a free pass at Loon Mountain for being over 80 years old while skiing with his grandchildren.

Ted was predeceased by his parents and his sister Marjorie Millspaugh.  He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, leadership and love.  He is survived by his wife Colby, sisters Linda Taylor and Jane Sereus (Bill), his children Gretchen Cooney (Gordon), Ted Millspaugh III and John Millspaugh, and six grandchildren, Alicia Millspaugh, TJ Millspaugh, Jack Millspaugh, Evan Millspaugh, Kate Millspaugh, and Jack Cooney.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the medical and nursing staff at Concord Hospital (Concord, NH) for their compassionate care during Ted's final days.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Ted's honor to causes close to his heart: Delaware Opportunities, https://delawareopportunities.org/index.php/donate, or mail to 35430 State Highway 10, Hamden, NY 13782; or Wesleyan University Athletics, https://athletics.wesleyan.edu, click on support or mail to Wesleyan University Athletics, 161 Cross Street, Middletown, CT 06459, Attn Sasha Gaeth (sgaeth@wesleyan.edu).
