Verna H. Wood, 89, a long time resident of Walton, passed away, Monday morning, May 17, 2010 at Countryside Care Center, following a long illness. Verna was born on April 11, 1921 in Glens Falls, NY the daughter of the late Guy and Edna (Allen) Van Heusen. On April 13, 1937 she married Leland Wood. He died on May 29, 2007.

Verna was employed for many years by the Eureka Tent Co. as a Sewing Machine Operator. She was a 78 year member of the First United Methodist Church, Walton; a member of the Methodist Women Church Group, the Home Bureau, and the morning bowling league.

Verna enjoyed needle work, sewing and crocheting. She was known for her keen sense of humor, her boundless energy and her cooking and baking. Verna loved to cook and bake for her family, where her macaroni & cheese, her real hot chocolate and her pies and cakes were always a treat for her children and grandchildren, when they would come to visit.

Verna is survived by her loving family, two daughters, Helen B. (Joseph) Rosa of Delhi; Gail L. (Donald) Dungey of Wells Bridge; and one son: Kenneth L. (Shirley) Wood of Walton; grandchildren, David (Heather) Rosa, Edward (Stephanie) Rosa, Eric (Claudia) Rosa, Gary Rosa, Frank (Winifred) Slawson, Gina (Denis) O'Flynn, and Amy (Russell) Velez, Tracy Wood, Crystal (Ed) Anderson, Ralph (Maryann) Wright Donna Rigdon; 22 great grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren, special niece and nephew, Sue Jennings and Clair Gray; and several cousins. She was predeceased by a son Paulie, a brother, Guy Van Heusen, and a sister, Beulah Gray.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 from 6 to 8 PM at the Courtney Funeral home, 25 Townsend St., Walton where services will be held on Thursday morning at 11 AM with the Rev. Joe Bokel, officiating. Burial will follow in Walton Cemetery.
