Walter B. Tompkins, age 84, of Downsville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 9, 2020, at Delhi Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Born August 29, 1936 in Andes, N.Y., he was a son of the late Walter and Iva Ferguson Tompkins.

On June 26, 1966, Walter married Betty Doyle Tompkins in Walton, N.Y.

In 1955 he graduated from Downsville Central School, receiving the athletic award. Walter was a proud member of the Colchester Community Church. He was involved in the Fire Department for over 50 years. As an avid outdoorsman Walter was also a member O & Y Hunting Club. He also enjoyed watching sports such as the Yankees baseball team and Syracuse basketball team. Most of all Walter loved dancing with his wife Betty.

Walter is survived by his loving wife, Betty Tompkins; children, Mark Tompkins (Pam), Daniel Tompkins (Tena), Andrew Tompkins; sister, Lena Barnes (Bill); grandchildren Rachel, Emily, Brennon, Justin, Christopher, Jason, Mark, Matthew and Amanda; 16 great grandchildren and his beloved dog Chloe. In addition to his parents, Walter was predeceased by his son, Duane Tompkins and granddaughter, Tabitha Coffey.

A graveside service to celebrate Walter's life will be held on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at 1 P.M. at Paige Cemetery, Downsville. Social distancing guidelines must be met, and face masks are required. Immediately following the graveside, family and friends are invited back to the Downsville Fire Station, 15166 NY-30, Downsville for continued fellowship.
