Obituary

Walter Roy Truman, 64, passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at home. After a long battle with cancer, he never gave up, but allowed himself to let go. Walt was known for his gregarious personality, zest for life and big laugh, which remained with him to the end.

He was born in Walton, March 19, 1947, the son of Fred and Frances (Doyle) Truman. He graduated from Walton Central School in 1965. Walt enlisted in the Army National Guard, where he acquired his passion for cooking and baking. Throughout his career, he worked for Bendix Corp, SJ Bailey and Del-Met. Upon Del-Met's closing he went to Delhi Tech and majored in Hospitality. He then worked for Stamford Nursing Home, Delaware County ARC and Walton Senior Dining Center. Walt was famous for his baked goods, especially cheesecake and also his jams and jellies. Sharing his goodies, brought him great joy. Wine-making and woodworking were also among his talents. He was also known for his locally unique love of the Seattle Seahawks.

Walt was a member of American Legion Post 32, where he was a Past Commander and also served Delaware County Commander.

He was pre-deceased by his father, Fred.

Walt is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Donna (Budine) Truman; his mother, Frances Truman, Walton; his daughter, Meredith Bakker, Walton; his step-son, Michael Roberts, Wheaton, MD; his step-daughter, Jennifer (Paul) Roberts Hutkowski, Pittsford NY. Also surviving him are his brother, James (Ellie) Truman, Walton; his eight grand-children, KT and Faith, Walton; Lily, Andy, Tim and Zack, Pittsford NY, and Owen and Emmet, Quakertown PA; his niece, Michelle; his nephew, Dustin, both of Walton; his great-niece Cadence; his great-nephew, Zander and several cousins including special cousin, Sue (Lou) DeLoy. He also leaves behind special friends, Steve French and George Scofield, his faithful buddy, "Moe" the cat, and Linda Wood and Morgan Krom at the Walton Senior Dining Center.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 from 2 PM to 4 PM and 6 PM to 8 PM at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton where services will be held on Thursday afternoon at 1 PM with the Reverend Bert More officiating. Burial will follow in Walton Cemetery with full military honors.

The family would like to thank Dr. Eric Bravin and the nursing staff at Bassett Cancer Center and everyone at Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care for their compassionate care and thoughtful support.
