Obituary

Wilma T. Champlin of Downsville passed away on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at Bassett Medical Center.

Wilma was born on April 24, 1926 in the Town of Harpersfield, the daughter of the late Albert and Nellie (Jones)Townsend. She married Allan Champlin on October 31, 1947 in Downsville.

Wilma graduated from Downsville Central School in 1943. She majored in music at SUNY Postdam, graduating in 1947. She taught both instrumental and vocal music at Delhi, Walton, and Downsville schools. Many students also took piano lessons from "Mrs. Champlin".

Wilma was a lifetime member of the Colchester Community Church. She was the organist and music choir director for many years. She also organized the "Damtown Players" musical group who performed in Downsville as well as traveled to nursing homes.

Wilma was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary James S. Moore Post 167, Downsville. She held many offices at both the local and county levels.

Wilma is survived by her husband of 64 years, Allan P. Champlin of Downsville; her children, Tom and Janet Champlin of Downsville; Carol Champlin of Goodyear Lake, Kathleen and Tim Moon of Apache Junction, AZ. , her grandchildren, Robb (Marne), Joseph (Cynthia), Gary, Sterling (Julie), Jennifer (Scott), Nick (Stephanie), her great grandchildren, Melanie, Elizabeth, Shannon, Sarah, Connor, Madison, Gavin, Brianna, Scott, Courtney, Benson, her brother, Robert Cable, her sisters in law, Catherine Townsend, Joyce Townsend, Grace Bryden, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by a daughter Anna Champlin in 2009, her sister, Marjorie, her brothers, Albert Jr., Gerald, and Willard "Chip".

Friends and family are invited to call on Friday, March 9, 2012, from 6PM to 8PM at the Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton.

A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 10AM at the Colchester Community Church, 15151 State Highway 30, Downsville with the Rev. Dale Ashby, officiating. Burial will follow in the Paige Cemetery.
